High Seas Musical “Anything Goes” Sets Sail at Wilsonville High School
Wilsonville High School Performing Arts will open their 2016-17 musical, Anything Goes, on February 23rd. This musical is a hilarious comedy set aboard a cruise ship featuring tap-dancing musical numbers and famous duets. The story revolves around Billy Crocker, a lowly assistant to a banker, who has stowed away aboard the SS American in the hopes of winning the hand of Hope Harcourt, a debutante he met one night in New York. But Hope is now sailing to England to marry the wealthy Lord Evelyn Oakley. Also aboard the ship is famous gangster Moonface Martin, dressed as a minister in hopes of eluding police because he is public enemy number thirteen. When public enemy number one, Snake Eyes Johnson, never shows up for the ship’s departure, Billy takes on his criminal identity and a madcap romp aboard an ocean liner ensues. In addition to Billy and Moonface, famous nightclub singer Reno Sweeney is aboard to entertain passengers and assist Billy and Moonface any way she can. This classical musical comedy was originally written in the 1930’s, with music and lyrics by the incomparable Cole Porter. Songs in the show include Anything Goes, I Get A Kick Out Of You, You’re The Top, Easy to Love, Friendship, De-lovely, Blow Gabriel Blow, and All Through the Night.
There have been several versions of the show produced since the premiere in 1936. The version that Wilsonville will present is the updated Broadway version that premiered in 1987 with Patti Lupone as Reno Sweeney, which was revived on Broadway in 2011 with Sutton Foster in the role of Reno. In the Wilsonville production, senior Hayden Wilde will be playing Reno Sweeney.
Other cast members include freshman Noah Hansen as Billy, junior Nathan Artman as Moonface, senior Larissa Fernandez as Hope Harcourt, sophomore Peyton Guenther as Mrs. Harcourt, junior Hyrum Worth as Lord Evelyn Oakley, senior Deirdre Fitzgerald as Erma, senior Alex Baarsch as Elisha Whitney, senior Camden Crystal as The Captain, and senior Joe Young as The Purser. A total of thirty-eight Wilsonville students are in the cast. Fifteen students will work behind the scenes as the technical crew.
Anything Goes is a team effort of the performing arts departments at Wilsonville High School. Band director Chad Davies will conduct the pit orchestra and choir teacher Annie Kubitschek is the vocal director of the show. The set itself is something to behold says director Jason Katz. “Kevin Cameron, our set designer, has created a beautiful ship that will transport the audience to the high seas.” Anything Goes has fond memories for director Katz because it is the first show he ever acting in during high school. “This was the show that got me hooked on theatre. Anything Goes kicked off a journey that has led to where I am today.”
