After a season which included a colorful production of Seussical, Three One-Acts, and award-winning musical theatre pieces that were presented at Night on Broadway, Wilsonville High Schools Theatre will present its final production of the school year, the Pulitzer-prize winning, firecracker of a comedy, You Can’t Take it With You, which also happens to contain actual fireworks, opening May 12th at 7pm.
This warm-hearted, hilarious play is about a creatively kooky family, the Sycamores, who simply do what they want to do, and nothing that they don’t want to do. The patriarch of the family, Grandpa Sycamore, spends his time collecting stamps, catching snakes, going to commencements, and dispensing wisdom. He quit the business world thirty-five years prior and never looked back. Surrounding Grandpa is his daughter Penny and her husband Paul, their dance-crazy daughter Essie and her xylophone-playing husband Ed, Irish maid Rheba and her immigrant boyfriend Donald, crazy Russian dance teacher Mr. Kohlenkhov, and other creative characters.
The story revolves around the relationship between Penny and Paul’s more conventional daughter Alice, who falls in love with her Wall Street Banker bosses’ son, Tony. Hilarity and emotional fireworks ensue when Tony’s blueblood parents, Mr. and Mrs. Kirby, come for dinner and unwillingly witness how the other half lives.
Grandpa is played by senior Drew Schwarzer, who is acting in his first lead role in a play. Penny is played by WHS theatre veteran, senior Mikhaila Bishop; Paul is played by senior Brock Taylor; Essie is played by junior Izzy Ochocki; Ed is played by freshman Nate Rasmussen; Alice is played by junior Ashlyn Rose; Tony is played by sophomore Nathan Artman; Mr. Kohlenkhov is played by sophomore Cory Brown; Rheba is played by senior Ally Cumiford; Donald is played by junior Morgan Wiedensmith; Mr. Kirby is played by senior Nathan Dillon; and Mrs. Kirby is being played by sophomore Callie Sahli.
Other cast members include Jack Edwards as Mr. Depinna, a former ice-delivery man who one day delivered the ice and then just “stayed.” Deirdre Fitzgerald as oft-drunk actress Gay Wellington, Anna Carr as Russian Countess Olga Katrina , Kalonni Smith as IRS agent Mr. Henderson, and Alex Baarsch, Joe Young, and Mark Pintar as FBI men.
The play is directed by Drama Program Co-Director Jason Katz, who directed the show at the high school previously in 2008. You Can’t Take it With You is recommended for families with children over the age of 12. Show dates are May 12, 13, 14, 19, 20, and 21 at 7pm in the Wilsonville High School Theatre. There will also be a 2pm matinee on Saturday, May 21st. Tickets are available online at www.wildcatdrama.com and at the door the night of performances. Box office opens at 6:30.
